On Aug. 6, 1946, a letter to the editor proved a harbinger of things to come, when a 17-year-old college student made a case for equal rights for black citizens years before he would become the face of the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King, Jr., then a 17-year-old sophomore at Morehouse College, wrote of those who raise “scarecrow” issues to kick up dust meant to obscure the real question of rights and opportunities for blacks.

His parents would later say that letter to the Atlanta Constitution was their first intimation of their son’s developing greatness.

This fall — years after the nation began marking King’s contributions with a national holiday — a group of Lincoln teens pondered that letter.
