A group of students recounted the contributions of young people to the civil rights movement Monday — from the streets of Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963 to the streets of Lincoln on a cold January morning — and encouraged their peers to keep marching.

“It has been the young people who sparked the movement, said Martin Luther King Jr., and so it is fitting that this year’s theme is ‘We the Children Will March,’” Lincoln East senior Sophia Olson said of the 24th Annual Martin Luther King Youth Rally and March in Lincoln.

“Our goal today is not to be a single march but to be a continuation of our ancestors’ efforts and inspiring of future children to continue to put one foot in front of the other to ensure justice and equity.”
